This member of the mint family has been requested frequently on my stall where it has sometimes been referred to (to my immense confusion) as ‘wild marjoram’. This variety should grow to about 50cm if left to its own devices and will produce small purple flowers, don’t panic though unlike basil that may bolt if left to flower oregano will just continue to grow all year round indoors.
Oregano has been used in the Mediterranean region for centuries becoming popular in America after the second world war when returning GI’s brought back a liking for what was often termed the ‘pizza herb’. Unlike most of the other herbs in our family of Hydro-herb kits, oregano benefits from being picked and dried, this process allows its flavour to fully develop. Oregano is a great addition to meets particularly lamb, going very well with any kind of kebab recipe. If you’re looking for a means to add some pep to your salads, look no further oregano is a great addition to Greek style salads.
Growing hydroponically means there's no mess and as the growth fluid is clearly visible in the lower part of the bottle it's very hard to run out without you noticing. There is enough fluid in the pack for at least a year's growth!

DESIGNED WITH THE ENVIRONMENT IN MIND
We have done our absolute best to ensure that the Hydro-herb kits we sell are as environmentally sound as we can make them. We source our parts carefully trying to ensure that we have as small a carbon footprint as we can. All of the parts in our kit are either recycled and recyclable or entirely biodegradable. The wine bottles that form the largest part of our kit are obviously reused rather than recycled locally minimizing any carbon production from melting the glass down or transport. We use capillary matting that is recycled and the plastic bottles in our kit are also made from recycled plastic that may itself be recycled. The Jiffy Pellets that we use are made of coir (ground coconut husk) rather than peat so that we are not contributing to the reduction of peat bogs. The cork lid/placemat comes from renewable sources in Europe as do the natural rubber band. The terracotta pebbles used in the kit along with the cork and natural rubber band are all biodegradable.
